Students engage in friendly competition at Varsity Sports Festival 2026
We recently held our Varsity Sports Festival alongside University College Birmingham and Birmingham Newman University.
The universities have united under a common vision to establish a competitive and social sport varsity, with the primary goal to enhance the visibility of sport and physical activity, and increase student engagement and sense of belonging.
The Walsall Campus Sports Centre came alive on Wednesday 25 March 2026 as students from three universities came together for the third annual Varsity event—an energetic celebration of sport, teamwork and community spirit.

This year’s Varsity, co-run by University of Wolverhampton, University College Birmingham (UCB), and Newman University, brought together almost 80 students, marking an impressive 10% increase in participation from last year and reflecting the growing enthusiasm and commitment across all teams involved.
The event featured a packed schedule of sports, including touch rugby, netball, women’s football, men’s football, basketball, dodgeball, badminton, mixed volleyball and cheerleading, ensuring there was something for everyone - whether playing, supporting or contributing behind the scenes.
Students played an essential role in shaping the event’s success. Alongside competitors, many supported the day through sports massage and therapy, first aid, and a variety of placement‑based roles, gaining hands‑on experience in real‑time event delivery. Their involvement not only kept the day running smoothly but also showcased the talent, professionalism and potential of our student community.
The competition between the three universities, continuing the established Varsity partnership - now in its third year, was close and full of exciting moments. UCB emerged as the overall winners, while Wolverhampton and Newman University tied for second place, separated by a margin of just 0.5 points.
Reflecting on the value of the event, Sport Development Assistant, Lauren Bowman, and Head of Sport and Physical Activity, Sarah Wood, said:
“Varsity 2026 fulfilled its aim of increasing student engagement by fostering a vibrant and inclusive atmosphere that encouraged active involvement from both participants and spectators. Throughout the day, the event helped students develop important skills such as teamwork, communication, and resilience. It also provided valuable experiences that built confidence, promoted sportsmanship, and supported mental well‑being by offering a fun, social, and active break from academic pressures, encouraging continued engagement beyond the classroom.
"Overall, the day demonstrated how such events can increase participation, strengthen school spirit, and leave a lasting positive impact on students.”
